old story idea from high school
THE SLIME
July 16th, 2026,
Dripping down from the walls, hanging from the rafters, oozing out of the drain. The slime dominates its host and slowly begins to take over. The slime is an off green, giving off a radiant glow warning any living being to steer clear. The thing about this slime is that it isn’t just slime. It gathers knowledge from its surroundings and advances over the land. Many have tried to fight it, many have tried to ignore it, and any effort to deter it has been dashed.
January 1rst 2012 is when it first made its appearance. The once clear rain turned thick and green. At first people tried to hide from it, but the slime eventually worked its way into the human psyche, causing worldwide insanity. There was no food, crops absorbed it and became too toxic for human consumption, and livestock was chemically burned to death. The human species has been forced to resort to cannibalism due to the lack of day-to-day resources. It was purely survival of the fittest. Darwin couldn’t have said it any better.
Along with the corrosion of human sanity came the corrosion of society. Buildings began to waste away, transportation was limited to your own two feet, and law could no longer hold any validity. The slime is the most efficient killer, for you can’t kill it, arrest it, or contain it. Some pray to God for relief, but the sad truth is that God is no longer willing to help. His creation had failed him. God had given us two paths to follow, the path of good, and the path of evil. We chose the path of evil and we destroyed our only home. Smoke clogged His blue skies and green our filled our pockets. This is hell, and no one saw it coming.
There are very few places that are impervious to the slimes acidity. Before everything was gone, the United Nations took initiative and built safe cities under the Earth’s surface. A 6-foot titanium walls separates us from the chaos that has become the earth. My name is Edward Forger and I am one of the few survivors left on earth. We have very few commodities left in our home, which leads me to believe that our last days are upon us. Soon we will be forced to return to the surface to join our cannibalistic brethren and breath the fumes of our own creation. Armageddon is in our hands, and all we can do is embrace it.
